Porn Use Grows Exponentially Every Year. Here Are The Stats for 2019.

Pornhub 2019 Year In Review: An Analysis

The beginning of 2020 means the end of another year and another decade. Companies are releasing reviews of their performance from the last 365 days, and Pornhub is no exception. They have released their Annual Year in Review, and after reading it, we felt compelled to write this article for Love People Not Pixels.

The statistics are heartbreaking. In fact, in writing this blog we had to take numerous breaks to process the enormity of the problem. We could use this startling information to blog for pages and pages about the realities that we as Defenders are up against, but we are choosing to look at a limited selection of key takeaways in order to recognize trends and be more informed in the fight.

Some Important Information to Note

Keep in mind, the statistics mentioned in this article only represent the consumption of porn through Pornhub. It does not include any consumption data from other streaming sites, physical copies of porn, time spent in strip clubs or brothels. What we are seeing with this data is just a fraction of the sex industry.

We have also chosen to NOT link to any data available on the Pornhub website because we do not want to cause any temptation for our brothers and sisters who may be struggling with a porn addiction. If you would like to confirm this information for yourself, you may do so by searching for The 2019 Year in Review – Pornhub, but we strongly encourage caution and consideration from anyone who chooses to do so.

The Stats to Know

  • 5,824,699,200 hours of porn were consumed on Pornhub in 2019. The equates to nearly 665,000 years or 9,159 lifetimes wasted around the world watching porn last year.

  • The United States consumed the most pornography of any country, watching nearly 3x the amount of porn as the next highest country of consumption.

  • The most popular time to watch porn is between 11 PM and midnight on Sundays.

  • Houston, Texas ranked 9th on consumption for cities worldwide.

  • Porn consumption knows no age, sexual orientation or gender – there are porn consumers across every demographic.

  • Playstation, Xbox, PS Vista, Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo WiiU are all popular devices to access pornography.

These Are People, Not Numbers

As we at Love People Not Pixels have asserted many times before, porn is prostitution, and prostitution is a system that capitalizes on vulnerable women. How is porn equitable to prostitution? Here’s how:

Prostitution turns a person into a Product, a person into a Purveyor (“pimp”), and a person into a Purchaser. This transaction creates a power dynamic in which the “Product”, or prostituted woman, has the least amount of power. This vulnerability is often exploited by the Purveyor or Purchaser. For this reason, prostitution is illegal in the United States and many other countries.

However, if you add a Photographer (or videographer) to record the events, this transaction is considered pornography production, which is not only legal in the U.S. but protected by the First Amendment. The aforementioned imbalance of power is why so many women (and yes, men too) in the porn industry are forced into conducting sexual acts that they would otherwise say no to. In any other context, this would be -at best- called exploitation. At worst? Rape. (trigger warning on that link)

So Now What?

Based on the data that Pornhub released themselves, pornography is being consumed in dizzying volume. Right now, right this minute, there are 80,032 visitors logging on to Pornhub. There will be 115 million total visits by the end of the day. This kind of demand ensures that the exploitation of women by the porn industry will never stop... unless we do something about it. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Educate Your Loved OnesWe must continue to educate ourselves, our loved ones and our communities. We must make it clear: these are real people, not pixels. Share this information, follow us on Facebook and Instagram @lovepeoplenotpixels, and sign up for our monthly Love Letters.

  2. Defend Love Your partners, your friends, your children and your neighbors may have an unwanted sexual behavior (like porn use). They’re going to need support in order to make a change. As a Defender, you can help them or anyone to fight to be free from their unwanted sexual behavior. Check out our Defend Hearts events and see how you can be equipped at one of our Defender Trainings.

  3. Donate We are fighting an industry with limitless resources. Merely succumbing to that fact is not an option. We need help fueling our programs and our people to keep Defending Love! If you are able, please support us here!

As disquieting as these statistics might be, we know there is also hope. There is hope as long as one person is ready to Defend. There is hope every time you join us in the fight. There is hope for the people who are fighting to find a life free from the grips of porn.

With you, there is hope.
